What equipment and software should I have for HDR photography
Why use a RAW file
Getting a good foundation image to make an HDR photo
Multiple capture images versus working from a single RAW file capture
Software examples for editing process
Final Image to photo

Your are encouraged to bring two or three RAW files on CD for in class editing examples.

Another shooting event at "The OLD HOWARD SMITH PAPER Mill" located in: Beauharnois, QC.

After the last success of hosting a shooting event at the old paper mill, I secured another date for "full access" to the property. This very cool industrial building, and property offers great architectural decay shooting areas, and many unique model posing opportunities industrial nudes, and limited only by your creative. Just think when everybody else in knocking elbows in the mayhem of holiday shopping we will be enjoying the sound of camera shutter releasing.

Those of you wanting a look at what the last group of people photographed at the mill I cordially invite you to attend the group show December 2nd, 2011 (7pm-10pm) hosted by Len Ward at his gallery. Len attended the last shoot with enthusiasm, and we will all be exhibiting on the walls of The ART & ARCHITECTURE GALLERY (located at 1181 Bank Street, Ottawa, ON)

This is an open invite to **photographers pending approval and payment of a $40.00 fee (this grants you access to the Mill, and a rules/safety meeting prior to shooting on location) for a full day of shooting. We have the owner's permission, so no jumping fences or trespassing required. There is a maximum for this event so book early to make the cut. There was a functional "restroom" last time I was there on location that we have access to, and for lunch there is a subway and local restaurant just around corner (or pack a lunch your choice, your expense). Don't forget to bring water, stay hydrated.

Those wanting to drive up at a different time and be later, that works too, but the day will end at the same time 06:00pm "ish".

No extra fee for models attending. Anybody taking a camera out to shoot will be charged the $40.00 photography fee out of fairness to those that have paid the fee.

ONE-ON-ONE INSTRUCTION:
In addition to doing some of my own shooting I will make myself available for private lesson instruction on camera set-up, composition, lighting gear you decide to bring along such as:
Nikon SB wireless "creative lighting system", Pocket Wizards, Pro Photo, Elinchrom, Bowens, etc...
I recommend a battery or power supply flash system because it is unsure if there will be available power outlets functioning in the areas you might want to shoot in.

My fee for this will $40 for 30mins., or $60 for a full hour.
Only 4 hours will be available for instruction (like I said I want to shoot some of my projects too), this is a fraction of what my usual instruction, or consulting fees are)

LIGHTING AT THE MILL:
Some electrical overhead lighting is available at the mill, but be aware it is a mix of fluorescent and mercury vapour lighting so some kelvin white balance control will need to be adjusted in your camera setting if you are shooting in colour. Also some available light through windows on some of the floors. We have access to power outlets so bring your lights, and 100 foot extension cords if you have them. I prefer to work with my Nikon SB900s in such an environment, but bring what you have and we will figure out a solution that works for you.

SAFETY:
Everybody participating, and entering the mill will be required to sign a waiver regarding non-owner liability. NO SMOKING inside the building, no exceptions. No alcohol, or drugs allowed on the premisses, keep it a professional day people! My brother will be along with me to provide additional security and general help as required.

MODELS:
I am planning on bringing one or two models with me for personal on-going projects I am working on. If time allows, please feel free to network with each others models. Negotiation of model fees, or TFP model agreements will be made individually with the models attending. Keep it professional and respectful with the models at all times please!

OTHER:
What to wear? Dress according to weather, December weather! It will be cold but we will have a heated room to use as "base camp" so to speak. If you plan on shooting with your model(s) in the nude be kind and bring them a blanket between set-up and shutter releasing. I recommend they bring a cozy bathrobe as well. Some of us have shot at this location at -25C and managed fine with the "focus" on shooting, not the cold...excuse the pun.

"TestFire Consulting" On Loaction:
My brother is part owner of a company called "TestFire Consulting" they provide movie props such as airsoft substitutes for real firearms to keep the "sets" safe for the action scenes in movies that require such attention to detail. He will have some of these items available for a nominal fee paid to him if anybody coming is interested.

A unique opportunity has come up to have a group shoot at "The OLD HOWARD SMITH PAPER Mill" located in Beauharnois, QC. It's highest paper product producing years years started in the 1920s.

I am hosting a shooting event at an old paper mill. This very cool industrial building and property offers great architectural decay shooting, and a unique model posing opportunity such as the industrial nudes with my models I plan on shooting on this day.

This is an open invite to photographers pending approval and payment of a $40.00 fee (this grants you access to the Mill, and a rules/safety meeting prior to shooting on location) for a full day of shooting. The Browncoats Burlesque Troupe @ The Rainbow in Ottawa

Once again The Browncoats have entertained the Ottawa bar scene at The Rainbow (Saturday, June 18th). The theme of time and space travel was brought to life through a very convincing cardboard box lettered in black marker called "The Time (Space Reality) Machine". The story telling through this time travel journey was read by Bella Barecatt and Lila Livewire. The stage manager for the evening was Beau Regard. A vast cast performing some creative original work to a fun rendition of the classic "let's do the time warp again" that brought the crowd to laughter, and cheer. Some lucky audience members were brought to stage to add some sizzle. Lana Lovecakes "sparkled" her nipples by way of her tassels singing happy birthday a la Marylin Munroe style for a birthday boy, and Ricky Menage stripped and danced with a blushing bride to be creating "cat calls" from particularly the female audience. The interaction and participation of the audience is a definite plus that this troupe has going for them in the Ottawa Burlesque scene that is in a growing spurt right now. Each time this troupe performs they evolve, coming together more as a group, and stepping things up with the creative hand made props they sometime destroy to give the full effect of the "skit" at hand. I also commend the Ottawa bar owner's and managers for welcoming the burlesque scene, rather then just the usual bands. Good on you The Rainbow.

I recently met Emily O through a mutual friend, and when she found out I am a photographer she mentioned she had modeled in the past and would like to shoot with me.

So...when our schedules allowed we got together for our first photo shoot, and this is the result. Emily is also a talented local Ottawa, Ontario comedian who tours across Canada and the US to express her "no holds barred" comedy when opportunities arise. If she does not put you on your ass laughing through her comedy, looks like she can put you on your ass in other ways!

Muffin Von Chub has been modeling in the nude and performing burlesque on and off for the past 6 years. Rhythm Method, an all girl hip hop band brought the house down!

A fun mix of burlesque, dance, and theatrical montage held at The Babylon Night Club in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The debut of the burlesque troupe the Browncoats was great. They stole the show with a variety of acts. The list included themes that were funny from a Dominatrix in training to the grotesque when Zombies and Vamps descended upon a body to feast as the crowd cheered.

HAPPY NEW YEAR'S EVERYBODY!

Well here we all are at the beginning of new year, a decade after Y2K when all technology in the world was going to cease working and implode on itself....right! Well now that we are all emerged in technology more then ever, I decided to go back to an old technology for my visit to New York City for New Year's, film. I thought about dusting off one of my old trusty Nikon F-Series film camera's but decided to push the nostalgia up a level with some plastic toy cameras. Taking pictures with these cameras is known as Lomography. Here are a few examples of what I was able to pull from my creative and these fun little cameras.

Model Shoot with Nadia!

Another fun and productive shoot in studio. One of the things I love the most about shooting with a new model is seeing confidence building throughout the shoot. I definitely think Nadia and I transitioned well yesterday with a variety of outfits, and poses.

One of my big passions for shooting (with my camera) is taking wilderness hikes, or going to captive environments such as zoos and so on to observe the animals. This is definitely something that was instilled by my late Grand-Pere. He taught me the wonders of nature and wildlife from the time I was able to walk, or stumble in the woods in some cases. The simple stress release of walking trails not knowing what is around the next corner is a great way to enjoy the day, I recommend it to anybody. Since we have created exactly what the last photo depicts to our environment and the beings that live in it, get out there before it is all gone and appreciate it.

I will be adding much more wildlife to the blog as I search my archives, and I am feeling inspired to "take a hike" as they say and to keep adding to my collection!

The Studio is...Tornado Alley!

The new studio is located on Cyrville Road in Ottawa, ON. The long weekend helped in getting everything over there, this Friday night will be organization time. The first shoot is scheduled already so I am happy about that, it is pushing me to get things done, and unpack the boxes.

Here is a quick pic of the mayhem I have to tackle...

The studio will only be open evenings, and weekends by appointment only.

Event Shoot October 10th, 2009 W-1

I attended and phtographed the W-1 MMA event last Saturday evening. My primary reason to attend the event was for local fighter and Dojo owner Nabil "The Thrill" Khatib. If you are wanting to learn Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) in the Ottawa area, I would recommend Team Bushido MMA Fitness Center (teambushido.com).

Here is the cut and past from the official W-1 Facebook event page. If you are a fight fan, or if you are simply wanting to attend a high energy entertainment event join the group and attend future events as a spectator. Ticket information would be available as a link in the group.

"W-1: WARRIOR-1" is The finest in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competition. The evolution of combat. One Step at a Time - Shoot with Rebecca

Sometimes things happen as firsts and lasts at the same time, this is one of those examples. This was Rebecca's first studio shoot and my last shoot at the Catherine Street location, in Ottawa. I let Rebecca's theatrical background guide her through the experience of her nudity in front of the lens, confidence and emotion emerged effortlessly. She is of course invited to the new studio once it is up and running, that will be very soon.

THE LEGEND - ROYCE GRACIE

I was fortunate enough to be the official photographer for the Royce Gracie Seminar and Training Session at the Therien Jui-Jitsu Dojo in Stittsville (jiu-jitsu.com), Ontario.

The invite came by way of a friend Sharon Young (a little power house kick boxer, and instructor), with permission of the Dojo manager Renshi Hana Abaza (devoted Jui-Jitsu practitioner, and instructor). A special thanks to the gracious hosting of this event by Dojo owner, and Jui-Jitsu Black Belt Instructor Shihan Randy Cooligan. The evening started with the Cooligan family presenting a cheque on behalf of the Dojo to a wonderful cause many of us with children certainly do appreciate, the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario(CHEO).

A soft spoken legend, his words filled the room with wisdom and instruction with a level of attention and respect rarely seen, the presence of Royce Gracie. So many positive things can be said by a man who amazed the fighting world, and first time spectators of MMA at UFC 1. Royce still amazes to this day with his Gracie Family Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The moment I saw this skinny tall guy take on giants two and almost three times his weight in what is now the infamous octagon, I was hooked. Suddenly traditional boxing (known as the sweet science), which I was a big fan of was now sour to me.

Tuesday night was an absolute honour for me to meet one of my MMA fighting heroes Royce Gracie, and felt very privileged with the fact he would let me practice my craft with camera in hand during his instruction (something rarely given by him, I am told). I also enjoyed conversation, and fight talk with his apprentice and competing MMA Canadian, Chris Robinson (Owner of Robinson's Karate Schools - teamrks.com). I wish Chris the best on his warrior path to victories.

I am still in amazement if you haven't guessed it! I have shot many celebrities over the years and never get star struck, but this was special for me. Here are a few examples of the event.

"Room 1908" with Meredith

I was on business in Toronto at the beginning of September, and to fill an evening with camera in hand I contacted Meredith to see if she was up for a shoot. Meredith was more than enthusiastic to do so, and here is the result of "ROOM 1908". I look forward to working with her again, we have already tossed some interesting concepts around...should be interesting!

Two Shoots in one session with Becky!

So I am not sure how I managed to over-schedule my time during vacation, but I am glad I did. Becky and I hit the studio hard tonight for what was to be only a Killer Chef shoot, and because my motorcycle was still at the studio she insisted on some shots on the bike as well. Who am I to say say no to such a great model and friend! This might be too soon to post a few shots of Becky on the bike after a fantastic shoot just last week with Brianna on it, but they have a different feel to me so I am posting them anyways. We managed to get these shots done in under two hours. I took about an hour to edit, my eyes are bugging tonight after such a frantic pace. I promised a few shots would be posted before I hop on the plane and here they are.

August 5th, 2009 - Model Shoot with B.

B. and I had been talking about shooting together for some time now. With our busy schedules never matching up we never thought it would happen. Well we finally got our first shoot in, and it was a fun one at that! B you are welcome back anytime to the studio, or if you just want to shoot for fun on location. Your professionalism, confidence, and preparedness for the shoot we discussed was appreciated and made things work with ease.

This was also my first shoot with the new Elinchrom Kit, I did however do a small test run the other day, never go in blind to a shoot with new gear before testing it. I love the changes to the usual ways I worked with studio flash heads. The built-in Skyport receivers worked flawlessly with consistent flash output through wireless communication from the Elinchrom Skyport transceiver mounted to the camera hotshoe, gotta love it when things work they are supposed to.

Americade 2009 - Lake George, New York

I have been going to Americade for 18 years, with only a few years missed in between. This year has to be the most memorable with perfect weather with the exception of rain for the ride home. This truly is an event not to miss if you are a motorcycle rider, or simply want to be a spectator of all things motorcycle. With the buying trade show for all kinds of goodies to the test rides from the factory suppliers, lots to do. The best action happens in the evening until late at night on the main drag (Canada Street), the busiest always the Friday and Saturday nights during the event dates. Here are a few shots from the event. For convenience I shot the entire event with a point and shoot digital camera...enjoy!

Las Vegas, Valley of Fire, and Death Valley

Just getting back from a great vacation adventure in Las Vegas, Nevada. The trip included a drive through Death Valley in California and the Valley of Fire in Nevada. Both locations are considered part of the Mojave desert, but with very different landscape and plant life. From the big lights of Vegas to a fragile flower blowing in the desert air here are some examples of what I shot.

January 31st 2009 - Event Shoot in Montréal

I was invited to shoot an event for Cirque de Boudoir in Montréal with a theme name of NECROMANTIK. Sounded interesting, and it certainly was! (photo on right: yes that's me sporting some Tripp, and Lip Service clothing)

Zombies, vampires, and fetish wear of all kinds was the preferred dress code for the night, some even decided to wear paint on flesh by Matt (Wellfedartist). A special thanks to Davidé for my all access pass and for the invite. I look forward to shooting more events in the future. Here is a few examples of the evenings macabre mayhem of debauchery and all out good times!

Charity Calendar with proceeds going to Bump N' Smash

In late October 2008, I was asked to be a volunteer photographer along with Photo Buddies (Cynthia Stewart and Freeman Keats) to shoot a charity calendar. I jumped at the chance to lend my time for this wonderful cause with 100% of the proceeds going to "Bump N' Smash". A special thanks to all the Scotia Ctr Suite Attendants for being the models and of course to Rachel Legault, and Jennifer Cook (both from Aramark) for organizing, modeling, and keeping the momentum of this project going with enthusiasm to final printed product!

The 2009 calendars will be available for purchase at the Sens store (Scotia Ctr) starting December 20th, 2008 for $20 each. I also have some that can be bought directly from me, please give me a call to get yours and to support a great cause in the process!

Bump N' Smash is an organization that has to date raised over $600,000 through corporate and private donations for local *children charities. All proceeds of our calendar will go to the flowing charities presented through Bump N' Smash as follows:

*Roger's House, a facility in Ottawa that welcomes a child in need of specialized services not available in their home, or hospital.

*The Ottawa Children's Treatment Centre, a facility in Ottawa for children with physical challenges to help achieve their maximum potential.

*and, The Sens Foundation who actively help various local charities, Roger's House (as mentioned above), and Kids Come First, proceeds go to Autism Society of Ontario, Ottawa Chapter.

The Kids Come First portion of the list is an important one to me. I have a personal connection and understanding with direct family impact. Some parents might feel powerless in the battle to understand Autism in their children. Through education, and continued research it gives people hope to battle, and cope with the varied challenges of ASD.

December 7th, 2008 - Model Shoot Extravaganza

A colleague Photographer asked if I would be interested in helping out with a shoot involving 10, to 12 models this past Sunday. I accepted the challenge and it was a great time shooting in a variety of locations at a local Ottawa club. The club posed a variety of challenges and that is a good thing to me, I love diversity in subject matter. The Models looks, characters, and varied choice of fashion attire made it an absolute pleasure. YOU "GALZ" ROCKED IT!

I am thanking all the models that participated in the shoot, you were all fantastic and amazing to work with!

I would also like to add a special thank you to Suzanne Boulanger for the invite, and to Pierre Brazeau the club's GM for hosting.

New York City = Inspiration and creative juice flow for me!

In the midst of a super busy September, and October Karen and I managed to get to New York City during Thanksgiving weekend (Columbus weekend for the American holiday). The goal was some shooting of course, and to take in some sites. We did do some "tourist things", but for the most part we went off the beaten path to explore with cameras in hand. From a local Jazz Club to a harbour tour the four day weekend was a whirlwind of diversified outings.
This is a quick collection of some of my shots from a great little getaway.
I would always recommend NYC to any artist needing some inspiration.

It definitely recharged my creative, and I am still feeding from my little bite of the big apple.

Excited about NYC

So I am writing this as a source of inspiration. I have had a "creative block" but I have been thinking about my upcoming Thanksgiving trip to New York City along with important issues and a significant refocus in my life, so my creative is coming back. All artists can acknowledge the creative slowdown, or loss of steam at times so I just wanted to post some shots from my last trip earlier this year to NYC. The city is so many things to so many people, you have to go there to understand this, and for me it is pure inspiration on many levels. It might not inspire all who view the photos, but it should spark something in the senses...something for you to think about, what inspires you, find it, and pull from it!
